Gnosis Top 10 February 2008

According to the gnosis2000 website, these are the top 10 highest rated progressive music albums of all time, as of this date:

1) King Crimson In the Court of the Crimson King Eng 1969
2) Banco del Mutuo Soccorso Darwin! Ita 1972
3) King Crimson Larks Tongues In Aspic Eng 1973
4) Änglagård Hybris Swe 1992
5) Genesis Selling England By The Pound Eng 1973
6) Hatfield and The North Rotter's Club Eng 1975
7) Premiata Forneria Marconi Per Un Amico Ita 1972
8) Banco del Mutuo Soccorso Io Sono Nato Libero Ita 1973
9) Genesis Foxtrot Eng 1972
10) National Health Of Queues And Cures Eng 1978

For the record...I have copies of all these releases save for the two Hatfield albums, and consider each release essential for any listener of prog, be they new to the genre or long time aficionados. Of these bands, I have seen one live (
Änglagård), and will be seeing a second this year (Banco del Mutuo Soccorso). I have skipped out on seeing two (PFM and Hatfield), and the less said about seeing King Crimson, the better. That leaves out Genesis, and...that'd be a story for another time, I guess...

uh oh... I only own two of those albums... both Crimson. Hmm...better get buying. :)

Wow, really?

Good luck finding the Anglagard, by the way...long out of print and way more expensive than any CD really has a right to be. But it's soooooo good...

I own all 10 of those. In fact, 19 of the top 20, and agreed, all are essential. Though I'm one of the biggest Genesis fans I know, so it's strange to say this, but I think people are too kind to Foxtrot.

Interesting also that there's no Yes in the top 10. (Close to the Edge is #11). Top thing on the Gnosis list at the moment that's a prog album (as opposed to a Jazz album) that I need immediately if it's ever reprinted is Eskaton's 'Four Visions' - ever heard?

And I'm fortunate enough to have seen all but National Health live, and that ship sailed a long time ago. Crimson twice, Banco once and hopefully again, Änglagård, Hatfield, and PFM once, and Genesis x3. God bless NEARfest.

No, I haven't heard the Eskaton, and I know I should. Maybe in June if you come by the BBQ you could bring it along so I could have a listen?

And agreed on NF :o) A big amen.

I'd bring the Eskaton happily if only I had it. :-) Need to keep an eye out for a used copy, surely.

Adam said...

...which, incidentally there's a used copy of on eBay that's already up to $32. Oof.

Bill K. said...

yeah...you said you didn't have it, didn't you?

Oops.

:o)

I think a guy on ProgEars is selling that copy, actually...along with the complete National Health...

Adam said...

Yeah, I did say that I don't have it. ;-)

And oh, look at that, high bidder is Rob Laduca. I know he owned it at one point, cause it's his copy that I've heard. Either he sold it in a fit of madness, or he's worn the bits off his. ;-)

You clearly need NH Complete if you don't have it, incidentally. Guy's also selling Koenjihyakkei's s/t, which is OOP also. Must be a little hard up. ;-)

Bill K. said...

Must be.

Right now my CD purchasing budget is...on the slight side...so it'd have to wait.

Adam said...

Yeah, um, likewise. :)

I think my days of buying CDs that much over regular list is kind of over. 15 years ago I had no issues spending $40, $40 and $50 for copies of the last three Sire Renaissance albums as they were only in print in Japan, but today...I'd probably pass.

I might see what I can pick up at NF...and I hear that the Koenjihyakkei is due for reprint this year anyway...

Yeah, I've never really tended to go apeshit over the Japanese imports and mini-LP sleeves and that whole scene like some people.

And I wouldn't be surprised to see Skin Graft reissue 'Hundred Sights...', especially as they've just done 'Viva Koenji!' to seemingly good response.
