New Keith Emerson Band DVD w/Marc Bonilla

Keith Emerson is hailed as a keyboard legend. He is known as one of the most prominent leaders in the progressive rock movement, fusing rock ‘n’ roll with a myriad of musical styles, such as classical, jazz and world music.

Marc Bonilla has played guitar and toured with Toy Matinee as well as recording two critically acclaimed guitar instrumental albums. For over a decade he has composed and performed for numerous television shows such as Justified, The PJ’s and 90210 as well as major motion pictures including Iron Man 2, The Replacements, Scorpion King, and Falling Down, collaborating with such notables as James Newton Howard, John Debney, Joel McNeely and Snuffy Walden, and receiving an Emmy award nomination in 2001 for his score for David Milch’s Big Apple.

Filmed 2008 in Moscow, Russia with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.

Last year marked Keith Emerson’s return as composer and performer with the highly acclaimed CD, The Keith Emerson Band Featuring Marc Bonilla. This DVD captures the live recordings of six songs from that CD.

Highlights include re-workings of several classic ELP tracks such as a full version of “Tarkus,” “Karn Evil 9,” “Lucky Man,” “Bitches Crystal” and “The Barbarian.” What distingushes these new arrangements has been the addition of guitar wizard, Marc Bonilla, both as singer and co-arranger. When interviewed recently Keith confessed that these new re-constructions with guitar reflected more accurately the way he had originally envisioned them.

Besides Emerson and Bonilla, the band members include drummer Tony Pia (who has played with Edgar Winter, Brian Setzer, and is currently with the Doobie Brothers) and multi-faceted newcomer Travis Davis on bass and backing vocals.

Camel News: Latimer health, new DVD, new album!

One of the most commented posts I've ever put up here had to do with the health of Camel guitarist/vocalist Andrew Latimer. It's thus that I feel very happy posting this bit of excerpts from the most recent Camel Productions eBeast newsletter:

Andrew's Health

This is officially the last time we will talk about Andrew's health. The bone marrow transplant has been a complete success, and I think the dark days are well and truly behind us. As I've said in past newsletters, he continues to have some challenges to face, but he is a strong-willed individual, and he will find way to overcome them. So, it's no longer about health problems. It's about the music...

The Opening Farewell

Andrew and Denis have now finished work on the DVD, and Denis has completed mixing the audio. Once all editing and mastering is complete, we'll send the masters off to the plant and it will be a matter of weeks before it's on sale in our shop.

Track listing:

Lady Fantasy
Lunar Sea
Unevensong
Another Night
Hymn to Her
Ice
Echoes
Spirit of the Water
Stationary Traveller

Format: NTSC*

(*This format will play on all equipment enabled for NTSC)

It would be hard to believe this was from 2003 had we not been through such an intense passage of time since then. In my darkest hour, I had not wanted to even consider releasing it posthumously. And so, it is with tremendous pleasure, that I announce the pending release of this DVD.

In The Meantime...

In between work on the DVD, Andrew and Denis have been writing material for the next Camel album. It is still in an embryonic state, but the two seem to be expanding their musical relationship and lots of good sounds have been emitting from the studio of late. No definitive dates are going to be announced until a cohesive body of work has been created. However, I think it safe to say that a Camel album is in the future and I, for one, am just about breathless with anticipation.

From.UZ: Inside Seventh Story DVD available to order

I can finally announce all the rest of the goodness about this one!

10T Records is excited to announce the release of the live concert DVD Inside Seventh Story by Uzbekistan-based prog-fusion rockers, From.uz. Inside Seventh Story captures these master musicians performing an expanded version of their latest, critically acclaimed release live before an appreciative hometown crowd at the Youth Theater of Uzbekistan, in Tashkent. This is the same venue that was featured in the band’s live debut CD/DVD, Audio Diplomacy.

Featuring founding members Vitaly Popeloff (guitars) and Albert Khalmurzaev (keyboards), the blistering performances captured on Inside Seventh Story also include the other musicians from the original CD release, Igor Elizov (grand piano & keyboards), Ali Izmailov (percussion) and Sur’at Kasimov (bass).

In their inimitable way, From.uz first worked out the music that would become Seventh Story for live performance before entering the studio. This DVD represents the culmination of that process, filmed with multiple cameras over 2 nights. The DVD also includes footage of the band rehearsing and preparing for their stage performance, as well as an interview with the band, and their producer, Igor Iosis.

“Those who have been fortunate enough to see From.uz perform live, either in person or on DVD, know that it is onstage that the band is at their absolute best,” says 10T Records president, Steve Carroll. “Everyone who enjoyed the band’s last studio release will want to seek out Inside Seventh Story to experience this material anew, now expanded and taken to a whole new level of energy and passion.”

Like all of the previous From.uz releases, Inside Seventh Story features artwork by renowned illustrator Ken Westphal, and is available for immediate shipping through the 10T Records website.

OPETH: In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall due in September

(NB: the BPB review of this release can now be found HERE.  Check it out!)

As part of the ongoing celebration of their 20th anniversary, Sweden’s Opeth is releasing live footage and audio from the band’s recent performance at London’s famed Royal Albert Hall. In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, due out September 21st, is a fierce testament to Opeth’s continued success in the progressive metal community.

Twenty years and nine records into their legendary career, Opeth’s “progressively creative spirit” (ARTISTdirect) remains unwavering, propelling the band through the “Evolution XX: An Opeth Anthology” tour, which brought the Swedish titans to six of the world’s most unique venues, and now, with the release of In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, into the homes of their fans.

The performance at the Royal Albert Hall (recorded on the 5th of April, 2010) includes two sets, the first consisting of the band performing 2000’s now-classic, breakthrough epic, Blackwater Park in its entirety, and the second, a chronologically arranged selection of material from the rest of Opeth’s extensive catalogue, totaling almost three hours of music. It is, like the rest of Opeth’s greatest work, “purposefully warped in all the right places” (Decibel). The front cover artwork concept pays tribute to Deep Purple´s Concerto for Group and Orchestra, underlining the band’s longstanding love for their prog-rock roots.

Thinking back to the concert, frontman Mikael Ã…kerfeldt says "Opeth had a magical night playing the Royal Albert Hall. It was a dream come true, and now afterwards, it still feels like a dream. We got it all on film, and this, our third live recording and DVD might be my personal favorite. One couldn't help to think of all the fantastic artists that played there over the years. Looking back at this night of celebration brings me fond memories of our 20th anniversary—this package is the delayed birthday present. Enjoy!"

The release will be available as three very special configurations:

1. Limited Edition Vinyl Box Set, which includes:
-Double-DVD set of Opeth’s performance at the legendary Royal Albert Hall, in its entirety, including bonus features.

New live VdGG releases!

This came out of left field...I didn't realise it was coming. Then again, I don't have Peter Hammill's news page bookmarked, only the lyrics page. Must remedy that. In any event, onward...

Now here's something exciting! The Trisector trio of Hugh Banton, Guy Evans and Peter Hammill performing an almost 2 hour concert with a great set-list in front of a tremendously enthusiastic crowd on April 14, 2007, all captured professionally.

"The Paradiso has been the scene of several epic shows in VdGG's past. This one's a gem of an addition to the collection. This was our first tour as a trio and by the time we arrived in Amsterdam we were well into our stride, having played nine previous shows. There's a mixture of old, new and rediscovered material here. The emphasis, though, is on looking forward rather than backward."-Peter Hammill

1. Lemmings
2. A Place To Survive
3. Lifetime
4. (In The) Black Room
5. Every Bloody Emperor
6. All That Before
7. Gog
8. Meurglys III, The Songwriter's Guild
9. The Sleepwalkers
10. Man-Erg
11. Scorched Earth

This is available on both CD and DVD, with the DVD also featuring an interview with PH from 2009. Looks like a must have!

(thanks to Steve F. from Wayside/Cuneiform for posting this and bringing it to my attention!)

In other ZpZ news...

A teaser for the forthcoming Zappa plays Zappa DVD, Son of Roxy & Elsewhere, has been officially posted to YouTube. It may be found here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wb-b4s-0ps&fmt=22

(Even though embedding is apparently available for this video, I will simply provide a link to it instead.)

I will likewise not comment on the title, nor the fact that we've been teased for several years about the imminent release of the original Roxy performances on DVD, yet this is coming out.

(Apologies for the mess up in the tags below...Blogger won't allow me to use an ampersand in a tag, hence we get 'son of roxy elsewhere' instead of the proper title.)

Deus Ex Machina return with Imparis

A sextet of violin, analog keyboards, guitar, bass, drums and vocals, Deus ex Machina's sound is a unique and unequaled blend of aggressive jazz-rock mixed with complex rhythms, 1970s-style hard-rock guitar and hints of Rock In Opposition-style avant-progressive rock, all topped by the incredible vocals of Alberto Piras, one of the most extraordinary vocalists working in rock today.

For this album, the band wanted to do something different and came up with an idea that presented a fun challenge to themselves. They had never played in France and on the outskirts of Paris, there was a world-class nightclub - Le Triton - that also featured a full recording studio as well as the ability to do a professional video shoot during performances. The band rented Le Triton for 3 days and spent two days recording. They also played a concert which was filmed. The result is Imparis, a double set that comprises a studio album of new material by the band as well as the band's first-ever DVD.

The studio CD contains 45' of new material while the DVD functions as a career overview of their last 10 years, featuring two songs each from their albums Equilibrismo Da Insofferenza, Cinque and Imparis. The concert program of the DVD is 60 minutes of professionally shot and edited live footage of the band performing completely live - there are no 'fixes or sweetening' of the performances and consequently, fans should find it more realistic and representative of a genuine live musical performance by a great, tight band than a typical 'live' DVD.

Also included are extras: interviews (funny and enlightening) + Paris backstage + a short, fascinating, avant-garde, prepared piano performance by Fabrizio of a one of the album's works + excerpts from Chapel Hill [USA 1996] + a totally over the top Italian TV performance [1996] + an charmngly dated music video that the band did in 1993. Total time of DVD is about 2 hours. Since they probably won't be coming to your hometown this week/month/year, this one is a no-brainer for their many fans.

DVD is NTSC, All Regions (Region 0)

Fresh from the recent rehearsals in Nashville, Gavin and Pat give it some boom, bash and bish. Based upon B’Boom, which in turn was based upon an exercise written by Gavin in his 1998 book, Rhythmic Illusions, the new Crim rhythm section gives an early indication of how formidable they might well be.
