Edensong live tonight in NYC (video premiere!)

The World Premier of Edensong’s “Beneath the Tide” music video
With performances from
Break of Reality
Edensong
and New Beard

Thursday, December 9th at 7 PM
Public Assembly at 70 N 6th St, Brooklyn, NY
Tickets $10 (adv from www.ticketweb.com), $13 (door),  21+

On Thursday, December 9th, Enjoy a multimedia evening of  three genre bending New York bands.  Break of Reality (www.breakofreality.com) headlines the show with their mind-blowing cello infused progressive rock, with supporting performances from orchestral rockers Edensong (www.edensongtheband.com), and the eclectic indie/prog/pop madness of New Beard (www.newbeardcity.com).  Edensong’s “Beneath the Tide” music video, directed by Nick Fiore (www.vimeo.com/nickfiore), will be screened between musical sets. This is not a show to miss!

Break of Reality (www.breakofreality.com) is a cello quartet gone mad. The band’s sound is cinematic, subdued and heavy all at once. Their live audiences are equally diverse; fans of Led Zeppelin, Radiohead and Yo-Yo Ma are finally getting acquainted. In 2006, Break of Reality released an independent album, The Sound Between, which has sold over 24,000 copies in the United States and around the world, much to the band's amazement. The band has been touring in support of their recent album, Spectrum of the Sky, released in the summer of 2009. The members of Break of Reality have been applauded for their "thunderous tone" and their "take no prisoner approach to cello playing" (Sacramento Bee Newspaper, June 2007). Their sound has been described as having "excitement, originality, and an undeniable intensity that louder, heavier bands only dream of. Break of Reality is going to win a Grammy someday. Bank on it.” (Rochester City News, April 2007).

Edensong (www.edensongtheband.com): Referred to as “a band to watch over the coming years... It almost frightens me where they’re going from here” (Bill‘s Prog Blog, September 2010), Edensong recently released their half live, half studio album "Echoes of Edensong: From the Studio and Stage" to rave reviews and early ‘Best of 2010’ lists. This, following the success of their debut album “The Fruit Fallen” (2008) and their unprecedented presence at many major progressive rock festivals of the past year:  Three Rivers Progressive Rock Festival in Pittsburgh, PA (www.3rprogfest.com), Progday in Chapel Hill, NC (www.progday.net), and Convention Terra Incognita in Quebec City, QC helped to gain Edensong a loyal following among progressive rock enthusiasts.  This show will mark the premier of their new music video for “Beneath the Tide.” For more information on Edensong, please visit the band's official website (www.edensongtheband.com), myspace page (www.myspace.com/edensong), or facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/edensongtheband). You can stream their entire catalog for free at the Edensong webstore: www.edensong.bandcamp.com.

New Beard (www.newbeardcity.com) is a new dynamic and innovative rock act based in New York and is the brother band of Edensong.  After the formation of the group by Ben Wigler and Andrew Dunn (both formerly of the indie rock band Arizona), Tony Waldman and "Tuba Joe" Exley soon joined and the boys started work on their first album while playing a series of shows that included an opening performance for Dead Confederate at the illustrious Music Hall of Williamsburg.  New Beard looks forward to sharing the stage with Break of Reality and Edensong and putting the final touches on their debut album.”

Orion Progressive Showcase: Uz Jsme Doma and Inzinzac on 9 October

8:00pm Saturday Night, October 9th
The Baltimore Progressive Rock Showcases at Orion Studios
http://www.orionsound.com/schedule2.htm
2903 Whittington Ave, Baltimore, MD 21230
present:

Uz Jsme Doma
(from the Czech Republic)
with guests:

Inzinzac
(from the Republic of Philadelphia)

Please join us as we welcome Czech legends Uz Jsme Doma back to the Orion Studios stage on Saturday night, October 9th! Below is a link to complete information regarding this show - which also contains a complete Orion Studios Fall 2010 Showcase Schedule with links to each band's website or MySpace page. Because the PE forum software has trouble with large postings I'm breaking this one into several posts. Hope you can make it - this is going to be one hell of a show!

Be here as we welcome back Czech rockers Uz Jsme Doma to the Orion Studios stage! Uz Jsme Doma is a living, fire-breathing alt-rock rock legend: one of "the two great Bastions of the Czech alternative scene," said the Prague Post, which ranked them in importance beside the Plastic People of the Universe. In 1989, when the Velvet Revolution ended Czechoslovakia's communist rule, Už Jsme Doma burst like a fireball from unlocked doors and began taking siege of every public stage worldwide. Since then, the band has blazed across multiple continents to perform literally thousands of concerts (they will celebrate playing their 2000th concert in March 2011), and played 50 to 60 shows annually for fans back home. To these audiences, Už Jsme Doma's music - rooted in punk's DIY ethic and driven by progressive and avant-garde musics' post-modern scavenger aesthetic - was the symbol of artistic freedom: the freedom to create without boundaries or restrictions.

For 25 years, the band's music has ignored genre walls, absorbing varied influences from punk rock (the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Damned), from avant-garde and avant-progressive bands (the Residents, Pere Ubu, Chrome, Fred Frith, Henry Cow and the Rock in Opposition movement), and even from folk music of its native land. It has also transcended artistic media. The band's leader Miroslav Wanek, who is also its composer, lyricist, and lead vocalist, maintains that Už Jsme Doma's music is "three parts: music, pictures and lyrics," and that artist Martin Velisek, who designs all band artwork, is a full band member whose "instruments" are brushes and paints. This multi-media emphasis allies the Czech band with the Residents and Sleepytime Guerilla Museum, two bands whose members have collaborated with Už Jsme Doma in the past. For its newest project, Caves / Jeskyne¡, Už Jsme Doma collaborated for the first time with the American label Cuneiform  to release its 7th album in North America and Western Europe. The CD is accompanied by a 12-page booklet featuring Velisek's artwork and English translations of Wanek's lyrics. The album's 11 songs create a potent and improbable mix of avant-punk's power, aggression, and urgency, and progressive rock's compositional complexity and thematic integrity. In Caves, Už Jsme Doma mines a motherload of rock music, extracts fragments of gems from both East and West, and forges the fertile ore into its own unique sound. Forged in Prague amidst that capital city's 21st C. renassiance, from choice elements mined locally and in the West, Už Jsme Doma's dynamic and confident new music heralds the dawn of New Europe as it emerges from the shadows to its west.

Inzinzac (named after a small town in France) are a alt-jazz/rock trio from Philadelphia formed by French guitarist/accordionist Alban Baily. Joined by saxophonist Dan Scofield (Shot x Shot) and Normal Love drummer Eli Litwin, the band plays a rough-edged cerebral music that shares common elements with Balkan, jazz, free improvisation and rock. Their music includes traces of Soft Machine, Ivo Papasov, and even a bit of '70s Miles Davis. Imagine "...Albert Ayler and Dave Lombardo stumblin onto a gypsy caravan and jamming with the locals under the influence of a full moon." (Shaun Brady - Philadelphia City Paper)

Prog Fury: An Evening of Progressive Rock in Cali 6 November

BG Productions presents "Prog Fury: An Evening of Progressive Rock" featuring three of Los Angeles' best prog-rock bands: K2, Mars Hollow and Phideaux.

"We're stoked to be able to organize an event such as this; Southern California seems to have a distinct lack of prog-rock shows and we aim to change that with what will hopefully become a series of 'Prog Fury' events", says Mars Hollow bassist Kerry Chicoine; "We're hoping this line-up can prove, once and for all, that live prog-rock can thrive in SoCal."

K2 will be celebrating the release of their new album on Magna Carta Records, Black Garden; special guests Phideaux are currently on the prog-rock festival circuit, playing England's Summer's End festival as well as ROSFest 2011. Mars Hollow will be debuting material from their forthcoming album (with former YES man Billy Sherwood producing).

"Prog Fury" will take place on November 6, 2010; see poster above (click it!) for details.

REMINDER: Univers Zero and Miriodor this weekend in DC

Don't you wish you could see these two bands on the same bill in the USA?

You can!

This is the world's first appearance of these two legendary bands performing on the same bill, and the debut performance for either band in Washington D.C.

Don't miss this extremely rare opportunity to see Univers Zero and Miriodor perform live in the USA!

Ticket details below:

UNIVERS ZERO

"Chamber music for the Apocalypse" – Keyboard

"Univers Zero conceptualize the Europe of the late 20th Century...dense, desperate and dark; ...above all beautiful and dramatic; strongly marked by the cultural traditions of Europe. ...Univers Zero may be classified somewhere between Bach and Bartok, Magma and Stravinsky...They represent something new, monumental and important..." – Puls [Norway]

The Belgian group Univers Zero is legendary for its ominous, unsettling and uncompromising musical vision – a sound and stance that Keyboard describes as "Chamber music for the Apocalypse." Simultaneously medieval and modern, its distinctive, dark, and elegantly beautiful instrumental music fused classical and rock musics to give birth to an unprecedented and remarkably prescient new musical genre called "chamber rock". UZ's singular sound derives from its unique instrumentation (classical acoustic and electric rock instruments, and electronics), combined with brooding gothic imagery, elements of European folk and other world musics, the iconoclasm and intensity of rock, the relentless sonic experimentation of the avant-garde, and leader/ chief composer/ drummer Daniel Denis' classically inspired writing style, influenced by early 20th Century avant-garde classical composers. The band has remained on the cutting edge of New Music throughout the course of a career that began in the '70s – it was one of the 5 founding bands of the “Rock In Opposition” movement [a European coalition for alternative music] – and continues today, stretching and disintegrating the boundaries of classical and rock music alike to create a new, vital and unique fusion.Today, several decades after Univers Zero first forged its unique "chamber rock", critics cite its oeuvre as the precursor to the best avant-garde rock and classical music of the present day, from 'post-rock', associated with Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Kayo Dot and other instrumental rock bands – to the numerous late 20th/early 21st century classical chamber ensembles who are integrating rock into their repertoire, such as Bang on a Can, Kronos Quartet and others.

MIRIODOR

"…densely packed with ideas yet paradoxically light in feel, offering up something new for the senses at every turn. The music is both entertainingly accessible and startlingly inventive…
…one of the finest bands ever to emerge from the Quebec musique actuele scene.” – All Music Guide

"…they are one of the finest exponents of the RIO sub genre on the market today. Always inventive, always surprising and always just a little off-kilter."
– ghostland.com

"…full of fire and eclecticism."– Gibraltar

Birthplace of the world-famous Cirque du Soleil, the performing arts troupe who reinvented the circus for the new Millennium, and the critically-acclaimed band Miriodor, whose genre-transcendent musical acrobatics catapult instrumental rock into the 21st Century, Canada’s French-speaking province of Quebec is an artistic hotbed. Looking internally and to Europe for inspiration while attempting to avoid influence from the entertainment industry in the United States, Quebecois artists have produced some of the most radically innovative music and performing arts to emerge from North America. Among the numerous highly original and uncompromising musical cooperatives – Ambiance Magnetiques/D.A.M.E., Godspeed You ! Black Emperor, and more– operating in French Canada in the decades surrounding the new Millennium, the key musical resource on the internet, the All Music Guide, singled out Miriodor as “…one of the finest bands ever to emerge from the Quebec musique actuele scene.”

A Montreal-based quartet, Miriodor create instrumental music that is complex, playful, visually evocative, and exquisitely performed. The band describes its sound as “like a soundtrack for a movie, a movie with weird and strange stories,” and indeed, each CD is like a book of short video stories, each differing in subject and mood. The band’s gem-like compositions, each as intricate as an Escher drawing and entertaining as fun-house mirrors, have been praised as “ominous, ferocious, and zany…complex musical mayhem” [Sea of Tranquility], exuding “a darkly comic dysfunction Tim Burton would give his eyeteeth for.” [Michigan Independent]. Miriodor’s distinctive compositions and rigorous musicianship have identified it as the main Canadian exponent of the R.I.O. (Rock In Opposition) sound with a light-hearted, unpresumptuous, and sincerely entertaining twist.

Shawn Persinger is Prester John at the NJ Proghouse this Friday

With a unique blend of acoustic folk, jazz, pop, bluegrass, funk and the avant-garde, New Haven, CT duo PRESTER JOHN has a sound that is entirely their own. Formed in 2008 by underground guitar-hero Shawn Persinger, Prester John also showcases the musical talents of David Miller on mandolin and vocals.

Taylor Guitars’ Wood and Steel once wrote, “Persinger has defined his career by playing hard-to-define music.” One minute you’re hearing a pop/rock song the next you’re listening to music that could have been composed by Stravinsky or Frank Zappa. And certainly Prester John’s authenticity is difficult to match; their bluegrass repertoire sounds straight out of Appalachia (no doubt due to Persinger’s West Virginia roots) and their swing tunes recall the bygone days of The Hot Club of France.

The PRESTER JOHN sound has developed over several years of Shawn’s solo touring and performing (playing on 5 continents, in 34 countries and countless cities). With the addition of the extremely versatile David Miller the possibilities are endless.

“This duo has started with a backlog of Shawn’s songs but the future of our sound is wide open,” says Miller. “We both have an interest in different types of music and we also have the ability to play many styles. Whether it’s the simplicity of a two and four backbeat or the complexity of an atonal melody. Nothing is dismissed.” It is that eclectic taste and skill that makes PRESTER JOHN a force to be reckoned with.

Piktor's Metamorphosis (jazz/fusion) at NJ Proghouse 16 October

Piktor's Metamorphosis began as a Jazz/Fusion/Prog concept group established in 2007 by bassist Brian Mooney along with remarkable keyboardist Marc Stasio. The idea was initially a tribute project to the great progressive Jazz/Symphonic Rock/Fusion music of David Sancious & Tone. The core trio was complete in 2008 when drummer Danny Pagan (Vernon Reid/Eddie Palmieri) joined Mooney and Stasio providing the dynamic propulsion this music demands. This amazingly creative music is challenging to cover - understandably a reason why many have not approached it.

In 2010 rather than maintaining a single tribute concept, the group has pushed its own envelope to include tributes to the music of Return to Forever, Chick Corea, Mahavishnu Orchestra, McCoy Tyner, Joe Farrell, Pat Metheny, Stanley Clarke, and many others. Originally a trio, the guitar was recently added to the ensemble (Monroe Quinn) thus opening up additional possibilities. The Jazz/Rock/Fusion era's experimental creativity and musical virtuosity has brought us all much enjoyment. Piktor's Metamorphosis now seeks to recreate some of the magic as well as make some of their own.

For the October 16th performance, tributes to the music of Return to Forever's: Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy & Romantic Warrior; David Sancious and Tone's: Forest of Feelings, Transformation, & True Stories; Chick Corea's: The Leprechaun; Mahavishnu Orchestra's Inner Worlds, and more…..

Mahogany Frog live in Montreal 9 September

ProgMontreal and Unicorn Digital are proud to present Mahogany Frog at the Club Lambi (4465 Saint-Laurent Boulevard, Montréal • 514-250-5917) on Thursday, September 9 2010, at 8:30 PM. Admission will be $15 at the door.

Mahogany Frog is an eclectic instrumental progressive/alt-rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba. The music draws influence from an array of genres: electronica, progressive rock, jazz, late 50's "ultra" lounge, ambient/experimentalism. With the use of a plethora of keyboards (both analogue & digital), feedback-ridden guitars, fuzz-bass and walls of electronic samples, the group creates a tube-saturated, highly overdriven jazz-rock with an enormous amount of energy. Live, the songs all flow together, creating a steady bombardment of highly progressive, exciting music that explores countless moods and ideas.

The group is composed of four highly talented multi-instrumentalists: Jesse Warkentin on guitars and keyboards, Graham Epp on guitars, keyboards and trumpet, Scott Ellenberger on bass and trumpet and Andy Rudolph, on drums/percussion and electronics. Mahogany Frog released their critically acclaimed fifth studio album entitled Do5 in 2008 as their complex and eclectic approach to music reaches new height. Check their MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/mahoganyfrog for a few great audio excerpts and full tracks.
