TFK update
From their official MySpace:
Just a quick hello to tell We're alive.
In fact we're alive to the point where we decided to rehearse a bit and to rehearse with two new members of the TFK tribe, 2 ? , yes that's correct.........most of you are already familiar with Erik Hammarstöm who will play drums for TFK but we've decided to bring in yet one more handyman.
Ola Heden will sing, play keyboards, guitar, percussion (dance)......well to augment where our little hands and heads are too busy......or used to be.
We've been working on getting the songs from last album into shape and lift them to a more detailed level even live. I left the rehearsal with a big smile........you'll figure out the rest.
btw.
go get CARPE DIEM - Live in USA when released (check your dealers)
also hurry to get tickets to our upcoming shows.
(yes we hope for a few more USA shows last week of August , but no west coast gigs this time, sorry.)

Flower Kings: Roine announced new permanent drummer
From The Flower Kings Official website:
OK flowerheads, I suppose it is about time to let you in on what is cooking in the FLOWERKINGS camp......we most certainly have a new drummer in the band, his name is Erik Hammarstöm, he is from Stockholm, he is 32 years old and have played drums for 25 years.
He is a terrific drummer (needless to say), we were all in awe after his "audition"so all fans will be VERY pleased, he is a bit of every drummer we've had, all the best bits. (yeah that's right, Dr. Frankenstien put him together of our drummer leftovers!)
(Please don't ask us why we change drummers like others change underware.....it's just the way it is, I guess that's what it takes to live up to being the Spinal Tap of prog !!)
However Erik Hammarström is great and hopefully he will be around for quite some time ( but one never knows, before you know it he'll combust, or levitate .....or just teleport to Mars, I'm afraid that's the price you've gotta pay to be in this band.
And yes, did I tell you he can drum?
The fact that the first track on the "demo" he sent me was Frank Zappa's "Black Page" tells a bit about his calibre.....!!!
As it is now Erik's first gig will be at the Loreley festival in Germany on July 19th.
We'll be doing some more shows, can't tell eggsagtly where (Happy Easter btw.) but check this space for updates.
Anyone eager to hear more of "The Sum Of No Evil" live ???
Then later this year we'll be recording a new TFK CD with Erik......now THAT will be a thrill!!!
Roine.

I think we need to start seeing other people...
Quite the provocative title, no?
I don't want to pretend that I am some all knowing sage when it comes to progressive music. I've listened to a lot...this is true. And I tend to be all over the map...I'll go from zeuhl to neo to prog metal to RiO to Canterbury without so much as a blink of the eye. For me, music is music, and music I like is music I like. I try not to look at things...well, I do look at them deeper than that, but at the most elemental levels, it all boils down to that spark...the frisson that occurs when a band and a listener connect on some deeper level.
The problem occurs when that connection begins to wear out.
And it happens.
Often.
And when it happens, I am left wondering if there is actually fault to be laid. Have I grown to expect too much of a band, and they no longer meet expectations that perhaps they cannot in good faith ever meet? Or has the band moved past me...or me past the band?
I look at a band like The Flower Kings, perhaps the most currently in vogue band to bad mouth. For me, and despite the protestations of their most fervent fans, they have not released an album which has enthused and thrilled (OK, perhaps overkill there, but go with me on this) since Unfold the Future in 2003...and even there, only in part. Listening to them live, they certainly have the skills to pull off their compositions, and they play well live. But the material, for this listener, seems mired in a tried and true method, based around 20 minute epics on every album and a sound that has become trademark. Have I grown to a point where the familiar no longer exerts pull...or has the band become static?
I think it's really a combination of the two...and at the same time, one of us has changed, and the other hasn't.
Should I expect a band to follow my tastes? Not necessarily. At the same time, while I certainly want them to remain true to their muses (or muse, if it is a single band member who exerts the most influence on the band's oeuvre), growth...progress...progression...occurs when a band pushed beyond the familiar.
There are a number of bands I could say the same thing for. As an example, I find it odd that the release of a new Dream Theater album finds me suddenly realising that their previous release wasn't quite so bad, really. Spock's Beard is a band that has changed their sound radically, in much the same way Genesis did with the departure of Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett...and while I am glad they are staking out a new sonic arena in which to work, I find it generally of less interest to me these days. At the same time, I see a band like Marillion, who seems perfectly capable of releasing a brilliant album (Marbles) followed by utter dross (Somewhere Else), and doing so repeatedly. I'm sure each of these bands are following their muse...and more and more frequently, I am finding myself unwilling to follow.
There's more to explore here...but that will have to wait for another post, and another time.

A few small bits of prog news
Dutch band Knight Area replaces Magenta at FMPM in Montreal. At the same time, "Knight Area currently is a 5 piece band. Rinie Huigen - one of the guitarists - has left the band and I (the one who started the whole thing) has left too, but started a new project Brandaris '78. I'm still doing some promotion and web maintenance for the band (my brother is in it you know...)," according to founder Joop Klazinga.
As has been discussed ad nauseum in a load of places, The Flower Kings have stepped down from their headlining spot at this year's ROSfest. They have been replaced by Maryland art rockers Crack the Sky, featuring original members John Palumbo, Joey D'Amico and Joe Macre.
Porcupine Tree has announced the release of a new live EP recorded in Orlando FL at a record shop in-store. Titled We Lost the Skyline, the EP features founder Steven Wilson and touring guitarist/vocalist John Wesley on 8 songs performed acoustically, including several rarely or never played. A highlight for this writer is a performance of the opening vocal section of "The Sky Moves Sideways," the lyrical source for this release's title.
The EP can be ordered HERE. US residents may be better served ordering from HERE in order to save on shipping costs (thanks to FZDolfan for reminding me about this link/site...it's the actual store the performance was recorded at).
