Summer is pretty much at an end, so the countdown to the festival starts here! Tickets for all 3 days remain available at www.summersend.co.uk . Don’t leave it ‘til the last minute!
First of all, we are sorry to announce that festival openers, Huw’s band Unto Us will be unable to play due to the unavailability of the band’s keyboard player, who will be on his honeymoon! Rehearsals continue to go exceptionally well, and the band will make its live debut later in the autumn. More news of them very soon. The band will be replaced, most likely by an acoustic act, and we will announce their identity soon.
Secondly, these are the draft timings for the festival. As always, please use these details as a guideline only, as they are subject to change at any time. Please note that there will be one long break only on the Saturday, for those of you planning meals!

Some Festival news
PROGDAY:
THE MUFFINS is one of those amazing bands that you used to hear about from the 1970s...after it had disbanded. Formed in 1973, the band released its first official album, "Manna/Mirage," in 1978. This would later be hailed as one of the best all-time American prog releases from the 70s and an essential release for any progressive music collection. But while the band developed a cult following on the US east coast, notoriety on a larger scale was elusive. Despite continuing to create excellent music and working with artists like Fred Frith (the band backed Frith on his 1980 album "Gravity"), THE MUFFINS played it's last show of the period in 1981 and broke up soon afterwards.
However, the legend of THE MUFFINS continued to grow long after its demise and in 1998 the progressive music scene was given a reprieve when the original members decided that they still had something to say and reformed. Unlike many other "reunions," THE MUFFINS really DID still have something to say and the band started writing and playing music again like they had never taken a 17 year vacation. This culminated in the release of a new critically acclaimed studio album, "Bandwidth," in 2001. Since then the band has continued to record and perform, appearing at ProgDay in 2001 and 2002, and at NEARfest in 2005. We are very happy to host the return of THE MUFFINS to the Storybook Farm stage.
THE MUFFINS is joined by Half Past Four and Mahogany Frog at ProgDay 2010. ProgDay is the longest running progressive rock festival in the world. The 16th edition will take place on Saturday, September 4, and Sunday, September 5, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. 2 more bands signed to Summer's End 2009
Mr So and So were forerunners of the mid 90s prog scene, before signing to Steve Rothery's "Dorian Music" label for 1998s The Overlap. A lengthy hiatus ended two years ago, when the band began recording and gigging again, culminating in new album Sugarstealer. Already available as a download and due for release on CD later in the year, the album combines modern progressive rock and pop, with the dual vocals of Shaun McGowan and Charlotte Evans combining impressively.

I/O Earth are a remarkable find, having just released a remarkably assured self titled double album. The brainchild of British multi-instrumentalists Dave Cureton and Adam Gough, the album combines melodic prog with ambient, classical and world music influences, and features a variety of vocalists including Steve Balsamo (ChimpanA, the Storys). The 6 piece live version of the band will open the Sunday of the festival on October 11th.

From the official press release"

Summer's End Festival announces 2009 details
We are delighted to announce that this year's edition of the Festival will take place on October 9 / 10 /11 at Lydney Town Hall, Gloucestershire, UK.
Festival founder Huw Lloyd Jones says:
"Lydney Town Hall was almost universally praised as a venue last year, so we are delighted to be back."
Co-organiser Stephen Lambe talks about the potential line up for 2009:
"After the response to last years Festival, the pressure is on to match it, but we are sure we can do it. We have some great ideas, and if even a few of them come off, it should be an amazing weekend."
We are also delighted to announce the first two bands booked for the Festival:
Parallel or 90 Degrees have announced that after a long hiatus they have reformed for a brand new album "Jitters" and some live dates. This follows the success of their Double CD retrospective "A Can of Worms" released last year. The band presents a harder edged, more contemporary sound than Andy Tillison's other project, the Tangent, who made a triumphant headline appearance last year. We are delighted to say that the band will have a prominent slot at this years Festival.
www.po90.com
www.myspace.com/po90degrees
We are also thrilled to welcome the brilliant Godsticks to one of the weekend's opening slots. Based in South Wales, this unique 3 piece impressed us with their music which combines prog with fusion, pop and just a touch of funk. Their great songwriting and outstanding musicianship can be heard on the bands 5 track self-titled EP, available from their Myspace site.

2 more bands signed for Summers End Festival
Summers End is delighted to confirm Quidam and Abarax as the latest additions to the Festival.
Quidam were one of the first Polish progressive bands to gain international prominence in the mid 90s. Their music has always been highly melodic, with flute a major part of their sound, but their recent material has introduced a strong contemporary feel, with great song writing accompanying epic instrumental passages. Their latest album, "Alone Together", released in 2007, has been hailed as their finest yet. The band will take the third Saturday slot, just prior to Magenta's appearance.
Having had to postpone their appearance at the festival for a year Abarax, from Germany, will finally take their place in the line up. The band play symphonic progressive rock with its feet in Pink Floyd territory, typified by the fabulous, fluid guitar of Dennis Grasekamp. Their album, the concept piece "The Crying of the Whales" is highly recommended. The band will play in the second slot on Saturday afternoon.
We also have exciting news about the headline appearance of the Tangent. Guy Manning will now take his place in the line up for the festival, meaning that Summers End is likely to be the only live appearance by the full band anywhere in 2008!

Summer's End Festival 2008: IQ, Threshold, more!
We are delighted to announce that the 4th Summer's End, the UK's finest Progressive Rock Festival, will take place on the 26/27/28 September, at its new home at The Hall, Lydney, Gloucestershire.
We are also thrilled to announce the first 3 bands for the Festival:
Following their inspirational set at the festival last year, Threshold will make a welcome return to Summer's End as headliners on Friday 26th. With Damian Wilson now firmly re-established as vocalist, prog-metal's brightest stars have gone from strength to strength in the last 12 months. Their most recent album, Dead Reckoning, has been rapturously received by prog and metal fans alike.
www.thresh.net
Prog legends iQ will headline Saturday 27th September. 25 years into their prestigious career, iQ continue to excite audiences all over the world. A new album - the much anticipated follow up to 2004's Dark Matter - is in the works, which will be the first with new keyboard player, Mark Westworth.
www.gep.co.uk/iq/
Special guests on Sunday 28th will be Frost*, whose 2006 album, Milliontown, was a huge hit amongst prog and rock audiences worldwide. Their new album, Experiments in Mass Appeal, is due for release in 2008 and looks set to further enhance their reputation, adding the vocal talents of Declan Burke (Darwin's Radio) to the existing band of Jem Godfrey, John Mitchell, John Jowitt and Andy Edwards.
http://thenewcube.blogspot.com/
The Hall, Lydney
Lydney is on the edge of the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, just 20 miles from Gloucester, 25 miles from Bristol and 40 miles from Cardiff and with excellent communications in every direction. The venue itself has a 400 capacity, with a comfortable atmosphere, great sound and a good-sized stage. Festival Co-organiser Huw Lloyd Jones explains the reasons for the move:
"The past 2 years at the Robin have been fantastic and we can't thank Mike Hamblett and his staff enough for their support and generosity. However, Summer's End was always conceived as a South-Western festival (our first edition was in Gloucester) and the time has come for us to move back home. The contacts we have established with local accommodation providers, combined with the charm of the venue, the town and the fabulous Forest of Dean will, we believe, deliver the best Summer's End yet."
The 2008 festival will take place on the evening of Friday 26th, Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th of September, with 1, 2 or 3 day tickets available. There are no age restrictions.
More details of the festival, including further bands, ticket sales, accommodation, and sponsorship packages will be released very soon.
