Strawbs Fall 2010 concert dates (including Electric Strawbs)

Moving into their fifth decade of musical innovation, The Strawbs will spend dates around the Equinox in the Midwest, East Coast and then electric Strawbs shows in Canada, continuing the tour that has charmed audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.

David Cousins who was hailed "the most talented Dylan influenced songwriter to come out of England" by the influential All Music Guide, still leads the group. Strawbs often are mentioned in the same breath as progressive rockers like Yes, The Moody Blues, and Renaissance. In fact, Rick Wakeman left Strawbs to join Yes, and Wakeman's son Oliver, who has replaced his father in Yes, played with the most recent electric version of Strawbs!

Beyond progressive rock, Strawbs brought another key component to their complex and intricate songs. Initially they fell in with the British Folk movement of the mid-'60s, starting life as the Strawberry Hill Boys and playing bluegrass. Even so, front man Cousins maintains, "I've never sung a folk song in my life!"

Moving more into the mainstream, the Strawbs joined forces with Sandy Denny. They recorded their first album with her for a Danish label. While she left them soon afterwards to join the seminal Fairport Convention, this record brought them to the attention of A&M records, which promptly signed them. The Strawbs were the first English band on the A&M roster.

On the strength of albums like Grave New World, Bursting at the Seams, Hero and Heroine, and Ghosts, and songs like "Benedictus," "Lay Down," and "A Glimpse of Heaven," Strawbs has retained a devoted following, a fan base that continues to grow. This acoustic tour features singer/guitarist Cousins, 37-year-long Strawb guitarist Dave Lambert and 36-year-long member bassist Chas Cronk. The group will also play five nights in Canada as the full electric Strawbs line-up.

On the American dates, fans can also buy recent CDs including All Our Own Work by Sandy Denny and the Strawbs, the Acoustic Strawbs Live at Hampton Court Palace and Dancing to the Devil's Beat, as well as Cousins' book Secrets, Stories & Songs.

Stretch - Summer 2010 tour dates

STRETCH IS:
GLENN ALEXANDER - guitar, vocals

DAVE LARUE - bass, vocals

BILL ELDER - drums

The instrumental progressive/fusion band Stretch was formed in 1982 when Bill Elder introduced Glenn Alexander to Dave LaRue. This was only two days after Alexander moved to New Brunswick, New Jersey. The band reunited in 2008 and have performed a handful of shows. Last year Stretch released their eponymous 1984 album on CD for the first time to celebrate its 25-year anniversary.

Since their heyday in the '80s, all three musicians have gone on to much more high-profile and lucrative gigs. In addition to having released numerous albums under his own name, Alexander has performed and recorded with Chico Hamilton, Levon Helm, Randy Brecker, the Max Weinberg 7 and many more. Currently he is performing with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and his own trio. Dave LaRue began playing with the Dixie Dregs in 1988 and is a member of the Steve Morse Band. He has also toured and recorded with Joe Satriani, John Petrucci of Dream Theater and others. He recently toured with the Steve Morse Band in support of their latest album Out Standing in Their Field. Bill Elder has been touring and recording with Latin-jazz percussionist Ray Mantilla. He has also toured with the Jazz Tribe, Arturo Sandoval, Stanley Turrentine and others.

Kurt Michaels festival dates (electronic/ambeint music)

From his recent news post:

I'm happy to announce some festival shows that we have coming up! We get to see some of our old friends again at Electro-Music 2008 in Kingsport, TN on August 16th and make some new friends at the Baltimore Music Conference in September (date tba shortly) and the City Skies Festival in Atlanta on October 4th.

For people that are familiar with my performances, I will once again be accompanied on synth by my good friend Jim Gully at these shows. In addition to the "fourth dimensional" soundscapes we are known for, our shows will also include a preview of some of the new musical "works in progress" being written for my next cd, which will introduce some good old fashioned singing and songwriting elements in the vein of the decidedly ethereal instrumental tracks we've been producing to date. These shows will also be amongst my first performances utilizing my new Godin LGXT, which is a guitar that allows me to mix in any combination of three voices: standard electric guitar pickups, a piezo electric pickup for acoustic guitar sounds and finally a midi pickup for synth sounds.

I expect some very pleasant musical surprises to come from this!

Hope to see you there !

Bruford/Earthworks news

Posted by Sid Smith at the Bill Bruford Website:

Well there’s no doubt that July is a jolly good month for Bill Bruford fans. Alongside Bill will be Tim Garland (saxes) Laurie Cottle (bass) and Gwilym Simcock (piano ) for three nights of instrumental fireworks at the legendary London jazz club, Ronnie Scott's.

The gigs will be running 28th – 30th July and are bound to be packed to the gills, especially when you consider that the last time Earthworks played in concert was January 2007. Our advice is to get your tickets sharpish. You snooze, you loose.

Earlier in the month (Tuesday July 8th) Bill will be performing with Tim Garland, guitarist Dave 'Fuse' Fiuczynski, and Andrei Kondakov, (piano, keyboards) in St. Petersburg.

The concert kicks off at 8.00 p.m in the spectacular surroundings of the Great Courtyard of the Winter Palace. You can find our more details by going here
