After Crying and Vedres Csaba to reunite at GoPROGFest

This just in from Luis Loureiro, one of the organisers of the Gouveia Prog Festivals:

After more than a decade and a half after their split, AFTER CRYING and VEDRES CSABA will meet onstage to play together!!

It was in '94 that AFTER CRYING released their classic "Föld és ég", an album that progressive music fans still regard as one of their musical strongest statements. After that, pianist, vocalist and composer Vedres Csaba decided to leave the band and to pursue his own ideas.

We all know what happened from then on: After Crying started changing their artistical approach, from a neoclassical background to a more rock-oriented frame, providing us with another set of great records. Also, Vedres took on his own composing ground and developed it in a rock environment, with Townscream, as well as going deeper into his classical views, solo or with projects such as the Kairosz Kvartet.

Sixteen years after AFTER CRYING and VEDRES decided to go separate ways, the GOUVEIA ART ROCK organization asked both to play the 2010 edition of the festival. Due to the unexpected events you may still remember, related to the european airspace shutdown caused by the icelandic volcano ash cloud, it was impossible for all of them to make their air trip to Portugal, last April. But we insisted, they said "yes", and here we are, on the verge of Gouveia's autumn progressive festival GoPROGFest. Next October 23rd, the legendary AFTER CRYING and VEDRES CSABA will meet again, on stage, and are set to play together for the sake of their fabulous musical legacy and the sake of our pure pleasure as music fans.

Are you ready??

Po90 reunite

The highly respected yet relatively unknown band Po90 (Parallel or 90 Degrees) will return for active service in 2009 (Including a prominent guest slot at the UK SUMMERS END FESTIVAL), after an absence of more than 7 years during which time their previous albums have become much sought after collectors items.

The reformed band are soon to enter the studio to record a new album, working title: "Jitters".

"The time is right" said Andy TD "this band has never announced a split, but it has been on a back burner for far too long, and the amount of good things people have had to say about our work since the release of our compilation album* have added extra impetus to our enthusiasm. It's great to playing together again, we are full of ideas and I really feel that our new material is the strongest we have ever had".

The band will once again feature Andy Tillison Diskdrive (whose successes with the international Progressive Rock band "The Tangent" are well documented) on keyboards, vocals etc, Dan Watts on guitar and electronic treatments (Dan has spent much of the time since Po90 last played composing and performing music for TV, including the "Sarah Jane Mysteries" spin-off of the popular "Doctor Who") and Alex King on Drums. These three regulars are joined by new member Matt Clark on Bass, Matt has worked extensively already with Dan and Alex in a band called British Fiction which continues to operate and will not be affected by the new Po90.

Likewise, The Tangent remains a going concern, with an album already composed and awaiting completion at an un-named point in the future. More details of this will shortly be found on the Tangent's website.

*A PO90 double CD retrospective 'A Can Of Worms' was released by Progrock Records in January and is available from the bands website. Recent reviews have described the band and this compilation as "A rare piece of musical genius", "Wildly Inventive", "Grossly Overlooked" and "One Hell Of A Ride".

Gryphon reunion show postponed

I know this is a little old, but I just saw this bit, so I am posting it here as well:

Due to lack of venue availability for the current year, we have been forced to postpone the Gryphon reunion concert until next year. We are sorry to have to do this but please be assured that as soon as we have finalised a venue and date for the gig, we will announce it without delay.

The album project is moving forward, (albeit slowly) and we will also be announcing updates on this as more is completed.

Thank you for your continued support for the band and be assured that you have not seen the last of us yet!

DUTCH MASTERS SUPERSISTER TO LIGHT UP NEARFEST `09

NEARfest '09 is pleased to announce that SUPERSISTER has signed on for Sunday evenings #3 slot. The band will be playing their 40th anniversary reunion gig in the United States at NEARfest `09.

While in school in 1968 they formed under the moniker Sweet Ok Sister but soon after changed their name with the departure of their first singer. Once under the name SUPERSISTER the band took a more serious approach to music making and gave us some of the finest progressive music from the era. Whether it was their debut `Present From Nancy' or `To the Highest Bidder', `Pudding En Gisteren' and `Iskander' the band made music that was well respected then and still is to this day. The band walked a line between Canterbury and Psychedelic with some intelligent pop thrown in for good measure. Robert Jan Stips (keys, vocals), Ron van Eck (bass) and Marco Vrolijk (drums), will regroup for NEARfest '09 although it will be minus Sacha van Geest (flute) who unexpectedly passed away in 2001. The band has a new flautist who will step in for the event to make the show complete.

Recently the band had their song "She Was Naked" featured in the 2007 Joy Division biopic `Control'. With this nod the band have recently found themselves in the spotlight once again with a new wave of interest both at home in The Hague and abroad. So get ready to welcome SUPERSISTER as we shine the spotlight on "The love child of Frank Zappa and Caravan" at NEARfest '09!

Curved Air continues reunion

9/27/2008 - London, UK - After a thrilling performance at this year's Isle of Wight Festival, the legendary progressive rock band Curved Air's re-union Tour continues with 6 more U.K concerts in October, an Italian mini tour in mid November and Japanese dates in Jan 2009. Curved Air's new album Reborn (Classic Curved Air Revisited) is available at all concerts and from www.curvedair.com

Curved Air originally formed in 1969. They were a groundbreaking progressive art-rock band renowned for their showmanship. Each member pushed the boundaries of possibilities for rock music performance. Darryl Way with his flamboyant virtuoso exploration of electric violin, Francis Monkman with his brilliant innovative sound manipulation using the VCS3 synthesiser, keyboards and fiery intricate guitar playing. and Florian's expressive approach to rock drumming. Vocalist Sonja Kristina won the hearts of a generation of music lovers and was voted top British Female Vocalist of the 70's whilst the three top twenty albums that this lineup released are regarded as classics.

Curved Air's current line-up features three original members - the pioneering rock violinist, Darryl Way, with drummer Florian Pilkington-Miksa plus new members Andy Christie on Guitar and Chris Harris on Bass - and of course iconic vocalist Sonja Kristina.

Curved Air vocalist Sonja Kristina's other project in collaboration with composer/ producer Marvin Ayres (www.marvinayres.com) is called MASK and on October 6th they release a single and video 'Technopia' ahead of their forthcoming second album release. The Technopia video is directed by Pavel Rudanovsky and features London Clubland celebrity Mika Doll. Technopia is currently in heavy rotation at art/gothic clubs, and at London fashion events popular with the fashion, art and experimental clubbing audience.

MASK will appear in national in-club PAs during the autumn, and a series of performances to promote the single and the forthcoming album 'Technopia' are being planned for 2009. The audience will experience an ambient Tim Burtonesque contemporary gothic show with artist and director Pavel Rudanovsky and his event styling team Unfashion Events. The performances will feature exciting artistic visual effects and 3D technology.

The first MASK album, 'Heavy Petal', was released in Dual Disc format (CD and DVD) in 2005. MASK toured extensively throughout the UK, playing many festivals including several stages at Glastonbury, clubs and new music venues.

'Heavy Petal' video "Lambent Spire" was selected for film festivals in London and Europe, and the dance mix of the track "Waking the Dream" charted in the Music Week club charts in 2006.

Fireballet...rising from the embers

This was posted to the newly started official Fireballet MySpace page:

OK, I promised news was coming and here is the first of it, and it is BIG! This comes straight from Jim Cuomo himself. For all of you who are attending Nearfest, check out the Fireballet table that will be there in the Vendor's room. There you will be able to get your hands on a t-shirt and sampler cd featuring three songs from the bands past. The CD will also have this news on it:

Coming in 2009!

*Deluxe Edition CD of Night on Bald Mountain (1975) including special ltd. edition packaging and bonus material.
*Deluxe Edition CD of Two, Too (1976) including special ltd. edition packaging and bonus material.
*ALL NEW STUDIO ALBUM!!
*Solo Album by Fireballet guitarist Ryhche Chlanda.

And much, much more!

This is very exciting news. Spread the word about this site, www.myspace.com/fireballetofficial

Fireballet were a Progressive rock band based in New Jersey in the early to mid-seventies. Their brand of music blended the sounds of bands such as Genesis, King Crimson, and Deep Purple with the chamber pop bands such as The Left Banke from the late 60s. They disbanded in 1976, but now the albums are finally being officially released on CD after only being available as bootlegs for so long. The embers have been stirred and it appears that Fireballet are about to reemerge on the music scene.
